Parking near The Stillwater Historical Lift Bridge in Stillwater, MN.
Spanning the scenic St. Croix River at the end of Chestnut Street in Stillwater, Minnesota, the Stillwater Lift Bridge is a historic landmark built in 1931. As a rare example of a Waddell & Harrington–designed vertical-lift bridge, it features steel truss spans and a movable center deck balanced by counterweights. Originally used for vehicle traffic along Minnesota State Highway 36 and Wisconsin Highway 64, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. After the opening of the St. Croix Crossing bridge in 2017, the lift bridge was closed to vehicles and later reopened in 2020 as a pedestrian and bicycle path. Today, it serves as a scenic and historic centerpiece of the St. Croix Loop Trail, offering visitors a unique blend of engineering history, river views, and small-town charm.
